Letting Go Of Problems

In counseling or coaching individuals often report feeling stuck in old behaviors or overwhelmed by old emotions. They say, "This is the way I've always been" or "I don't see a way out" or they can't fathom how they might change. I hear statements like:

  • "I just finished an argument with my brothers. I'm feeling the same anger I felt 30 years ago."
  • "I can't go to sleep at night worrying that my child might wake up."
  • "I get that same fear every time I begin looking for a job."

It's easy to stay stuck in a story. The beauty of new research on the brain reveals that repeating old negative stories initiates emotions that get reinforced in the brain. So the good news is that when clients understand how the brain really works, they feel encouraged to use specific tools that diminish "flight, fight, or freeze" responses in the limbic area of the brain. They learn how to use the prefrontal cortex of the brain to focus and to be conscious.

    Tools For Change

As clients face their problems, they discover it's hard work. But it's also a relief to find out that learning specific tools releases them from the burden of old emotions and behavior. With my support and guidance, they discover "I am not my emotions. " This realization seems to be key to finding freedom from anxiety and stress. The ultimate result is finding they have the knowledge to heal themselves in the future without counseling. Helping clients find this freedom is my intention for all who come to me for counseling.
